The Transformation of Cal Ros

During the 90s, a wine revolution began in the Priorat. Gerard’s family, founder of the project, had been involved in the region’s viticulture for many generations, but the art of winemaking had been lost, and the grapes were sold to the local cooperative.

To make use of the family vineyard’s potential, in 1999 we decided to transform the basement of the historic house in Porrera, Cal Ros, into a modern winery: where there had once been stables and small rooms to store wine, we built a winery and an aging room with a capacity of 25,000 bottles.

The vineyards: La Garranxa, Els Carners and Tros Nou

Gerard Batllevell Simó, with the support of his father, the advice of his uncle Josep, the winemaker Josep Àngel Mestres, and his friend Toni Pena, a great wine enthusiast, started the project in 1999. The first harvest was an experiment to observe what could be achieved by working with the old vineyards.

Between 1999 and 2001, 15,000 new vines were planted on terraces at our estate La Garranxa, a remote and wild spot above the village of Porrera, at 600 meters altitude and facing northeast. With the fruit from these vines, since 2004, we have been producing Sentius.

In recent years, we have also carefully selected grapes from a single vineyard of century-old Garnacha and Carignan vines, from the Els Carners estate, to produce one or two special barrels of Les Eres dels Carners.

Philosophy and commitment

“Our philosophy is simple: consistency, passion and quality. We craft wines that express their origin and possess their own personality. We are fully committed to every phase of the winemaking process: from pruning and vineyard care, through harvest, vinification, aging, bottling, labeling, and all the way to final sale.”
